The novels of the greatest Hungarian storyteller, Mór Jókai, are the treasures of our national culture. The Jókai encyclopedia explains and interprets the words and expressions of Jókai's novels that are difficult to understand today in alphabetical order; gives the Hungarian translation of the foreign language words, phrases, sentences in the novels, indicating the language of the given text; communicates knowledge of Jókai's novel figures and the persons in his works; it briefly presents words and concepts related to historical events that appear in novels. The editors processed Jókai's 74 novels and novels. The handbook contains 28,850 headlines and provides information on about 1,150 people. For most words, phrases, names (17,050 cases) it tells where the keyword occurs. The titles of the Jókai encyclopedia are: a) landscape words, folk words; b) old, obsolete, archaic words; c) language renewal words; (d) foreign words and expressions (most common: Greek, Latin, Hebrew, German, English, French, Italian, Turkish, Slovak); (e) mirror translations; f) technical words of professions, crafts, fields of activity; g) Words composed by Jókai, funny word distortions; h) words used by the writer in a different meaning than today. Thematically, the headings can be divided into the following main groups: a) scientific terms; (b) legal terms; c) card players; d) student language words; e) thief words; f) proper names (historical persons, mythological figures, biblical figures, literary figures, existing and imaginary geographical names, titles of literary works, titles of works of art, titles of journals, dailies). The handbook promotes the understanding reading of Jókai's novels, flashes the richness and diversity of the writer's vocabulary, and helps those interested to increase their general education, expand their knowledge of cultural history, ethnography and history. The editors are the authors of many popular dictionaries and manuals. József Attila Balázsi Golden Penna Award winning linguist, dictionary editor, lexicographer. Gábor Kiss is a recognized expert in Hungarian dictionary writing, the editor-in-chief of TINTA Könyvkiadó, and a member of the Dictionary Working Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
